Nursery Projects: The Paint Story...

I am beginning to think the hardest decision I've ever made is what color to paint our nursery! (Haha-kidding, but not totally.) And in the end I didn't even make the decision, I forced Shad to do it because I couldn't think about it anymore! So my original color scheme in my head included a light aqua blue (didn't realize this includes nearly unlimited possibilities), navy, orange, some green, brown, and off-white. My plan was to paint the bottom third of the room off-white-which we did no problem-and the top an aqua blue.

Turns out it is soo hard to pick the right blue! What I discovered: a paint color looks one way on the little paper swatch, a different way when mixed in a $3 sample container, another different way when mixed in a gallon size, and all of these are different in different lighting, when held up against different colors, or when mixed by different guys at the paint store. Headache.

After collecting about 100 swatches, buying a sample, buying 2 different color gallons and going back to have one of them remixed, we finally settled on a color and just went for it. Honestly, I'm not sure I totally LOVE it, but I like it and I know it will look good when I get everything else put together with it.
What it looks like in natural light
What it looks like in artificial light

What we struggled with was finding an aqua blue that looks good with the off-white in the room, but also was still what I imagined for my color scheme. Aqua is apparently a little bright against a more dull off-white and when painted on such a big surface area. You're probably thinking that I'm ridiculous, and maybe I am, but I have never put this much thought into a decorating project and I really want to love the end result!

I'm just glad that the painting is FINALLY done and I can move on to some more fun projects. My next project is the dresser. I'm going to be painting an old dresser either navy or off-white (I know, I know more tough color choices). I also have to switch out the knobs and line the inside of the drawers with a fun color/pattern. Why is it that I feel like I won't be ready to have this baby until my nursery is done?

beautiful boy

I just finished this really amazing book called "beautiful boy" and I would recommend it to everyone. The book is written by the father of a methamphetamine addict and is about his family's story in struggling with his son's addiction. The book goes through the story from the very beginning-starting with his son's birth. It not only tells the story of how this son became an addict, but how the family deals with it and the author gives a lot of background information about different drugs. My family has had to struggle with addiction, unfortunately, but what many people don't know is that drug addiction is very common and I believe that it's only getting worse. I think it is important that all people know more about drug addiction so that we can work together to prevent it. The following is a combination of opinion and fact about drugs that I have gathered from my experience, things I've heard from others' experiences, and things I have read.

I want you to notice that I said addiction is a family struggle. When one member of the family is dealing with an addiction, it most definitely becomes a family affair. I have not heard of a situation where this isn't the case. When a person becomes addicted to a substance-or probably anything for that matter-they become a black hole/tornado of destruction for the whole family. This isn't to mean that the actual person is bad-they typically are not-but the addiction turns them into something completely different from their normal self. The whole family suffers as they try to revolve around the addiction and may go through denial, co-dependency, and a million other different non-functional roles in an attempt to help rid the addict of their problem.

This book was very interesting to me as I found that the author, David Sheff, and his family's experiences were very similar to my own family. Hearing others stories in rehabilitation and treatment centers I have found many similarities as well. The bottom line is that addiction turns a person into a monster. (I say this with no intent to offend, the person is not the monster, but the addiction is). When a person is addicted to a substance they will go to extreme lengths to get that substance. When they are on a substance they will do and say things that would literally appall them in a sober state. Families of the addicted are often blindsided time and time again because there is no "expected" when it comes to addiction. Substances will take over a person's life and change who they are.

Another reason I really like this book is that Sheff goes into a lot of detail about meth, how it affects people, the history of it, and what he discovered through trial and error about rehab centers. I always think it is good to know more about dangers that are lurking for our kids, our loved ones, and ourselves. Knowledge is power in my mind, and the more aware people are about drugs, the better we can fight against them.

I feel very strongly about this topic because I know how incredibly EASY it is to become addicted to something. Most kids will be introduced to some type of substance during their teenage years. I don't need a statistic to back me up on this one. Teenagers have some sort of uncanny ability to get a hold of alcohol and pot, and you better believe your kids will see it and most likely be offered it at least once. Once a kid tries alcohol or pot, it is that much easier to pop prescription pills or try other drugs. The path to addiction is a short one, Sheff's son went from trying ecstasy once (much more common among teenagers than you would think!) to a full blown meth addiction in a single summer. It is different with each individual depending on their genes, but from what I understand, once a person experiences a high, their brain is more driven to experience that 'good' feeling again and again and with more intensity each time. Once a person has gotten into a cycle of drug use, the body becomes so accustomed to having it that without it intense withdrawal symptoms occur or at the very least severe depression.

After going through the pains of addiction in my own family, I want to do everything in my power to keep anyone I love from suffering through it. I would recommend any parent or anyone planning on being a parent to read this book, or one like it, just so they understand how real and dangerous drugs are and how available they are to your kids. If you are still reading, you are awesome :) Thanks for hearing out my rant and please educate yourself about drugs!

Nursery Projects: The Chair Rail

Well, as promised, here I am with pictures of our chair rail project we did for the nursery. First of all, can I just say that DIY projects (especially those on pinterest) are never as easy for me as people say they're going to be? They always number through a series of easy sounding steps and end with some sort of viola, you have a perfect, beautiful whatever! Well our chair rail isn't perfect, and not necessarily even beautiful, but we got through it and we are still happily married! :)

This is my 'before' picture. This is the original color and design of the room. Excuse the mess..

The first board is up! I'm not sure if our nails were too long or what, but we had some serious issues getting them nailed in all the way. We had to bend two over on their side and hammer them down sideways-frustrating.

The rail all glued/nailed in, wood puttied, sanded, and ready for paint!

The rail and bottom of the wall after the first coat of paint. We chose to paint the rail and wall the same color as the existing color on the baseboards.

After the second coat of paint-the chair rail is all finished and we are ready to paint the top half of the room. The only thing is... we're not positive about the color so next is a picture of a small sampling I tried of the color we think we like.

It's really hard to tell in this picture... but the sample we tried is a light aqua blue called "the harbor." I think I'm going to go with it, but I have the hardest time deciding! What do you think?

In the end the colors in the room will be light aqua blue, navy blue, tan, brown, and orange. I'm doing a project with Safari animals too, so I guess that's my theme. Next I'll show you the finished top wall color, we'll see if I want to go with this harbor color or keep looking...

Baby Shower

A month or so ago I helped (a little) do a baby shower for my sister-in-law Amanda who just had the most adorable baby girl! I've been waiting to get my hands on some good pictures to share because it turned out soo cute (thanks Amanda, hope it's ok I stole them)! Amanda's friend Annie planned the whole thing and she is one amazing party planner! I can only take credit for my delegated assignments, just want you to know I'm not taking credit, just sharing how cute it was! Congrats to Amanda and her beautiful new daughter Jaidyn :).

I am so happy that today is Friday and I made it through this week! Shad spent the week in Florida on a vacation paid for by work and I got to spend the week all by my lonesome and working A LOT! I missed that boy a little too much and I'm so happy to have him home! I am more than excited to be taking on a lot less hours at work from next week onward, my feet are not taking well to my new pregnancy weight.. I will be starting our first nursery project (hopefully) next week: a chair rail. Wish me luck, pictures to come!
